Incorporated: 1774
|
Origin: Settled by colonists from Dover and Somersworth, this town went through the names Ham's-town, East-town, and Watertown before it was incorporated as Wakefield in 1774. Wakefield in Yorkshire, England, was the location of Wentworth Castle, the home of Wentworth ancestors. Wakefield includes the villages of Union and Sanbornville.

Population Trends:
After decreasing by three percent between 1950-1960, Wakefield's population increased quickly, growing above the statewide average. Decennial growth rates peaked with a 58 percent increase between 1970-1980. Over fifty years, Wakefield's population increased by a total of 2,985 residents, going from 1,267 in 1950 to 4,252 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Wakefield was 4,600 residents, which ranked 74th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
