Incorporated: 1763

Origin: Chartered in 1763, the land was considered so inaccessible that the grant was enlarged, making Sandwich one of the largest towns in the state. It was named in honor of John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich. The Earl is known as the inventor of the sandwich, requesting from his servant a thin slab of meat placed between two slices of bread, which he consumed while intent upon the gaming table. The town of Sandwich is in the Sandwich Range, with seventeen listed peaks, including Sandwich Dome.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 905 residents in 1790

Population Trends: Sandwich's population more than doubled over the last five decades, with peak growth in the middle decade. Decennial growth rates ranged from a one percent increase between 1950-1960 to a 36 percent increase between 1970-1980. Sandwich's population increased by a total of 671 residents, going from 615 in 1950 to 1,286 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Sandwich was 1,339 residents, which ranked 165th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2004: 14.7 persons per square mile of land area. Sandwich contains 91.2 square miles of land area and 2.9 square miles of inland water area.
