Incorporated: 1871

Origin: Granted in 1748, this town was named Sanborntown, after John Sanborn, a close friend of Governor Benning Wentworth. It was one of the first four towns to be given a charter by the Masonian Proprietors. The town was the site of the colonial army's winter quarters during the Canada Expedition in 1746. Sanbornton includes the villages of North Sanbornton and Gaza, named for the biblical land.

Population Trends:
Population in Sanbornton grew over three and a half times larger over the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a 14 percent increase between 1950-1960 to a 64 percent increase between 1970-1980. Over fifty years, Sanbornton's population increased by a total of 1,826 residents, going from 755 in 1950 to 2,581 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Sanbornton was 2,854 residents, which ranked 110th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
