Incorporated: 1785
|
Origin: Originally known as Wigwam Village, and then New Garden, the town was named for the Ossipee Indians, one of the twelve Algonquin tribes. It was once the site of an Indian stockade fort, designed to protect the tribe from Mohawks in the west. In 1725, the Indian stockade was destroyed, and then rebuilt by Captain John Lovewell. The new fort was one of the largest in New England.

Population Trends:
Ossipee's population grew above the statewide average rate over the last three decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from virtually no change between 1950-1960 to a fifty percent increase between 1970-1980. Over fifty years, Ossipee's population increased by a total of 2,799 residents, going from 1,412 residents in 1950 to 4,211 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Ossipee was 4,523 residents, which ranked 77th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
