Origin: Holderness was named in 1751 for Robert Darcy, fourth Earl of Holderness, ambassador to Venice and minister at The Hague under King George III. He opposed the king's policy toward the colonies, and became a close friend of Governor Wentworth in efforts to promote friendly trade relations abroad. In 1761, the land was regranted to a group of New England families, including Samuel Livermore, who wanted to create a pretentious estate similar to that of the English countryside.

Population Trends:
Population in Holderness grew over two and a half times larger over the last five decades, going from 731 residents as of the 1950 Census to 1,930 residents as of the 2000 Census, a total increase of 1,199 residents. Decennial population growth rates for Holderness ranged from a two percent increase between 1950-1960 to a 51 percent increase between 1970-1980. The 2004 Census estimate for Holderness was 2,048 residents, which ranked 134th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
