Incorporated: 1831

Origin: Following an influx of new settlers from Maine into Effingham, there was a conflict of culture and religion between them and people from the seacoast area who already populated Effingham. As a result, a section of that town known as North Effingham was separated into a town of its own. The newly incorporated town was appropriately named Freedom.

Population Trends:
Freedom's population has grown over four times larger over the last five decades, but remained below 1,000 until the 2000 Census. Decennial growth rates ranged from a seven percent increase between 1960-1970 to an 86 percent increase between 1970-1980. Freedom's population grew by a total of 988 residents, going from 315 in 1950 to 1,303 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Freedom was 1,418 residents, which ranked 163rd among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
