Origin: This town was first settled by the Leavitts of Hampton, and named Leavittstown. In 1749, the land was granted by Governor Benning Wentworth, and he named it Effingham for the Howard family, who were Earls of Effingham.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 154 residents in 1790

Population Trends: Effingham's population has grow well above average for the last three decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a four percent decrease between 1950-1960 to a 66 percent increase between 1970-1980; fast growth continued through 2000. Effingham's population more than tripled, increasing by a total of 932 residents, going from 341 in 1950 to 1,273 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Effingham was 1,325 residents, which ranked 166th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2004: 34.1 persons per square mile of land area. Effingham contains 38.9 square miles of land area and 1.1 square miles of inland water area.
