Incorporated: 1778
|
Origin: Settled in 1726 by Scotch-Irish immigrants, the town was first named Coleraine. It was later named Brookfield, after a town of the same name in Massachusetts, and was made part of Middleton. In 1794, it became an independent town, a popular settlement for farmers because of the fertile ground.

Population Trends:
Brookfield's population growth rates have gone from a decrease to nearly doubling, but the town's population has yet to rise above 700 residents. Decennial growth rates ranged from a nine percent decrease between 1950-1960 to a 94 percent increase between 1970-1980. Brookfield's population increased from 159 in 1950 to 604 in 2000, increasing by a total of 445 residents. The 2004 Census estimate for Brookfield was 656 residents, which ranked 209th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
