Origin: Granted in 1727, the town was established to deal with rapidly expanding population in the seacoast area. A majority of new settlers came from either Barnstable on Cape Cod or Hampstead on Long Island, and the town's name is a conjunction of the two. The town includes three villages, South Barnstead, Center Barnstead, and Barnstead; and is home to at least nine lakes and ponds.

Population Trends:
Decennial population growth rates in Barnstead have ranged from virtually no change between 1950-1960, when the population increased by only four residents, to a 105 percent increase between 1970-1980, when the population more than doubled in size. Barnstead's population went from 846 in 1950 to 3,886 in 2000, a total increase of 3,040 residents. The 2004 Census estimate for Barnstead was 4,433 residents, which ranked 80th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
