Origin: Once the southwest section of Holderness, Ashland was not incorporated until 1868. It was named in honor of Henry Clay, for his birthplace in Ashland, Virginia, and his estate in Kentucky. Ashland includes the geographic center of the state, located just west of Lake Winnipesaukee.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 885 residents in 1870

Population Trends: Ashland's population growth rates have been well below the statewide average for each of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from an eight percent decrease between 1950-1960 to a 13 percent increase between 1970-1980. Ashland's population grew by a total of 356 residents over fifty years, going from 1,599 in 1950 to 1,955 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Ashland was 1,987 residents, which ranked 139th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2004: 175.7 persons per square mile of land area. Ashland contains 11.3 square miles of land area and 0.5 square miles of inland water area.
